SS304 vs SS316 Stainless Steel for Invisible Grills: What's the Difference?

SS304 is the most widely used stainless steel grade in the invisible grill industry, and for good reason. With 18% chromium forming a tough oxide layer on the surface, SS304 cables resist atmospheric corrosion excellently in Ranchi's inland climate. In residential areas like Doranda, Lalpur, Ashok Nagar, Bariatu, and Morabadi — where air quality is standard urban level — SS304 invisible grills comfortably last 15+ years without any discolouration, pitting, or structural weakening. The cables maintain their tensile strength (520+ MPa) through Ranchi's full climate cycle: the dry 40°C+ summers, the 1,400 mm monsoon deluge, and the cool 5°C winter nights. GrillNet Ranchi uses Japanese-specification SS304 wire rope (7x7 strand construction) that is tested to exceed 400 kg breaking load per cable. For 85% of Ranchi apartments, SS304 is the right choice — it delivers excellent performance at a significantly lower price point than SS316.

SS316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to the alloy, which fundamentally changes how the steel resists corrosion. Molybdenum creates a more stable passive layer that withstands chloride attack, sulphuric acid exposure, and pitting corrosion — threats that SS304 cannot fully handle. In the Ranchi context, SS316 becomes important in specific situations: homes near the Namkum industrial belt where chemical fumes are present, properties close to Tatisilwai and Patratu where coal particulates settle on surfaces, ground-floor and first-floor apartments where direct rain splash and standing moisture contact the cables daily, and buildings near heavy traffic corridors where vehicular exhaust accelerates corrosion. SS316 cables also have slightly higher tensile strength (580+ MPa) and maintain their polished appearance longer.
